Wife cleans truck

MERIDIAN — Yesterday I visited a friend while his wife was cleaning his truck.

Now I don't know about you, but it seems to me that not many women do that for their men nowadays. Do trucks now come with a factory warranty? One that reads, "After 10,000 miles wife must clean out truck while you relax." I don't think so.

So what was his secret? Probably a big case of blackmail going on, if you ask me. Not natural. Something Mother Nature never intended. Doesn't she know about women's liberation? Men can't get women to serve them, can they? But she cleaned out his truck! I saw it with my own eyes.

Look at these words from the first Book in the Bible: Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule ..." God created man in His own image ... male and female. So we are created equal but different.

It means that God put something of his own nature into the two sexes of the human race; something that requires BOTH male and female to fully express. If you don't appreciate women, if you abuse women, then you are disrespecting the Creator, since women are made in the image of God.

But understanding women, honoring them, and communicating with them is difficult for us men. In fact, a lot of us fail at this important point, as our wives can attest. But we can learn!

This weekend, I will have been married to the same woman for 44 years. How did that happen? Easy — at college, I proposed to the first woman from Mississippi that I met. It worked! Having exchanged vows, she was patient while her "Mr. Wonderful" learned how to be a husband and how to understand her as a woman. Apart from getting saved, finding her was the best thing that has ever happened to me.

Here's a story I ran into recently. It reinforces the fact that us men can easily fall short of understanding our wives and what they really need.

After 35 years of marriage, a husband and wife came in for counseling. When asked what the problem was, the wife went into a tirade listing every problem they had ever had in the years they had been married. On and on: neglect, lack of intimacy, emptiness, loneliness, feeling unloved and unlovable, an entire laundry list of unmet needs she had endured.

Finally, after allowing this for a sufficient length of time, the therapist got up, walked around his desk and after asking the wife to stand, he embraced and kissed her long and passionately as her husband watched — with a raised eyebrow.

The woman shut up and quietly sat down as though in a daze. The therapist turned to the husband and said, "This is what your wife needs at least three times a week. Can you do this?"

The husband replied: "Well, I can drop her off here on Mondays and Wednesdays, but on Fridays, I fish."
