From the Shepherd's Heart

MERIDIAN — "For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing."  — 2 Corinthians 2:15

Smells can be something worth celebrating! The smell of the perfume of someone special, the aroma of a Thanksgiving meal, the smell of clean sheets on the bed, are but a few of the aromas I celebrate.

Smell is an important sense we have. It has been documented that full blood relatives can identify each other by smell.

One particular species of bear has the ability to smell seven times better than blood hounds and can smell food 18 miles away. I have a 13 year old rat terrier who cannot hear, but knows when I pass because of smell.

2 Corinthians 2:15 describes God with a sense of smell too. This verse says that God can smell the aroma of Christ on those who smell that way. God can pick us out of the crowd by the way we smell like Christ.

The question that arises is, "How do we become the aroma of Christ?" I haven't seen the aroma of Christ for sale in a perfume bottle. No soap claims such an odor.

But, there may be one way we can become identifiable and pleasant-smelling to God. We tend to smell like the place we have been.

If you have been near a fire, you will smell like smoke. The way we gain the aroma of Christ is to be near Him! When we fellowship with Christ, He rubs off on us. He affects how we think, talk, act, and relate to others. When that occurs, that is the smell God has been desiring to find among us.

I assume you want to please God today. If so, you must allow enough of Jesus to rub off on you that it will be unmistakable who you have been with.
