The torn $2 bill

MERIDIAN — “Martial Law Declared” reads a future headline. Could this happen? Yes, because America's democracy is failing. We are forfeiting our freedom.

Thomas Jefferson warned us this day might come, when we surrendered individual responsibility to the state. Can we turn things around? At this point, it seems impossible.

I'm not talking about the government shutdown. That’s bad, but this is bigger than politics. As a nation, we have cut the roots of the tree of liberty and the branches are dying. Those roots once ran deep and connected us to our God-given covenant, a compact now forgotten, neglected, or ignored.

Have you ever seen the beautiful $2 bill? They are not common but are legal tender. Unlike the new $100 bill just released, the $2 bill has never been redesigned. I once gave a crisp new $2 bill to everyone in my church to illustrate a truth. On the backside of this currency is the famous picture of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. That's our historical birth certificate!

Today, most Americans don't know where they came from. When I was in high school, my history text included the Great Awakening and stories of how John Wesley's preaching shaped our national values.

Moral consciousness — an awareness of God our Creator and the role of biblical law — caused good people to reject slavery, to accept individual responsibility, to want to own private property and to pursue prosperity for the sake of their family. Our first universities — Princeton, Harvard, and Yale — all majored in theology.

Democracy fails when public school textbooks purposely rewrite history to eliminate the Christian faith of our founding fathers as though our great nation suddenly sprang into existence of itself, in a secular vacuum, without the strong biblical values of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

Democracy fails when TV news media all jump on the bandwagon of one party and uniformly demonize the other party. The media monopoly and its pervasive influence amounts to electronic brainwashing. To them, Tea Party patriots, home-schoolers, and social conservatives are evil, while liberals who want to “share the wealth” with income re-distribution are good.

Democracy fails when elected officials don’t understand our Republic’s roots and pass legislation without considering its full effects. Did they really mean to move thousands of people down to part-time work? Did they really mean to give the Executive Branch such enormous power over U.S. citizens' lives?

There is no vision for American survival much less restoring American greatness. As a consequence we are left to languish in the “i-zone” of ignorance, idolatry and immorality. That’s why it feels like we are becoming poorer — because we are.

For fifty years America has been telling God, "Get out of our schools. Get out of our courts. Get out of our sex lives. Get out of our politics." We have taken our $2 bill – a symbol of our historic covenant given us by God - and torn it in half.
