Signposts on the road to Armageddon

MERIDIAN — Testy Russia or Magog of the Bible has regained some of the super power character as she has sparred with the U.S. and the Obama administration. In the 1990s many believed Russia could not recover from the degeneration of the USSR and the worldwide loss of fame and power.

But, the Bible predicted a robust and mighty army will come to assume a significant role in these last days. Any student of Bible prophecy has known for years that Ezekiel 38:2 is where you find the name Magog, which will be the nation recorded as the leader of a coalition of nations that will move to destroy the Jewish state of Israel.

Magog dates back 4,500 years to the Flood and the instruction God gave Noah and his sons to populate the earth, Genesis 9:1. In the next chapter of Genesis, Japheth has a son named Magog who raised his family and taught them a new language as they moved to the North of the Caspian and Black Sea. Today, we call the land Russia.

Ezekiel 38:12 predicts that Russia/Magog will be the leader of many nations who will attack Israel to annihilate the Jewish state. As the U.S. and Russia move into another Cold War, the end of times scenario has been complicated in the adoption of Russian babies by American families.  These two superpowers have complex relations and do not act like allies.

Pride and competition has intensified between Russia/Magog and the U.S. as recently as the chemical weapons crisis in Syria and Magog assumed the leading role in peace.

One of the predictions believed will occur in the next few years is the invasion by Gog/Magog from the North country with a consortium of Islamic states against Israel. (Ezekiel 38:3-5)  Russia will be divinely defeated. Many prophecy scholars believe that Israel will seek a lasting peace as she accepts a false Messiah as the One World Leader. Christians call this One World Leader, the anti-Christ.

Daniel 9 states that this covenant will guarantee peace for the Middle East region. In fact it will be so charged with belief that the Anti-Christ is the Messiah that Israel will lay down its arms.

Daniel 9:27 reads “and he shall confirm the covenant (of peace) with many for one week: and in the midst of the week (of years) he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease.” What will be the circumstances surrounding that time and the scenario that could be in these events?

Daniel 8:24 states, “he (the Assyrian, the anti-Christ) shall prosper and thrive; He shall destroy the mighty, and also the holy people. (25) And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes”—at the end of time when Jesus returns at HIS second coming as recorded in Revelation 19.

Jesus said in Luke 21:34 "But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly.” He said further in Luke 21:36 "Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man."

As we approach the Christmas season one may ask, Why are we looking at such a heavy subject in prophecy? John as he was exiled on the Isle of Patmos with his freedom of speech removed and no sheltered protection, suffered. They did not have human rights. They did not have three squares and bed as he was tortured and  he dared to look at another leader, King Jesus.

But, John wrote “Jesus is the Spirit of prophecy.”  The Bible is a unified statement that God intended to send a Savior to redeem his creation and He is looking for you.

To predict Christ will be born in a little town called Bethlehem is unbelievable. However, Micah 5:2 predicted 700 years before the birth of Jesus that a “ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times" (NIV) and from the Ancient of Days will be born in Bethlehem. PROBABILITY—IMPOSSIBLE  But,  because He came we, “have now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him” (Rom5:9) and “having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, we enter Heaven’s throne room.” (Heb10:19)
