Signposts on the road to Armageddon

MERIDIAN — The Times of Israel headline dated Dec. 10, 2013 reads, Assad: “I will win, even if Damascus is destroyed.”

According to the daily, Brahimi told Assad that he could not remain in power and that the opposition could defeat him, but the cost may be the complete destruction of Damascus. To that, Assad reportedly answered “I will win the war, even if Damascus is destroyed.”

Significant? Yes! Because Isaiah 17:1 (NIV) records a prophecy against Damascus: "See, Damascus will no longer be a city, but will become a heap of ruins … and in that day the glory of Jacob will fade.”

Some scholars believe that the destruction occurred in 732 BC after a destructive siege. However, it appears that fulfillment of this prophecy did not meet God’s criteria in that it never was utterly destroyed.

Damascus is the oldest continuously inhabited functional city in the world. But, God says “I will not let them go unpunished!” (Amos 3:3) Further, God says I will send fire and I will break down the gates of Damascus. The destructive ruin will be so great that a lizard will not cross the city.

Assad’s statement indicates that the prophesy of destruction may be about to happen in that city. Another element of the destruction of Damascus could be fulfilled and utterly destroyed by chemical or nuclear war.

If the media concern for destruction is assumed to be by the Syrian rebels it is important to note that Bible prophecy indicates Israel may destroy Damascus.      Israel's growing nuclear arsenal and increasing capability to deliver munitions causes the Arabs to believe Israel has the weapons and is willing to use them if necessary in preemptive strikes. The nuclear deterrent within Israel is an explanation and reason for the relative quiet until the balance of power has changed.

In 2002, it was revealed that Iran had secretly been enriching uranium, which is the key component of a nuclear bomb. The logic is that any opponent of Israel must have nuclear power like Israel or any plan is suicidal until nuclear parity is achieved. One nuclear bomb or "suitcase" bomb is not enough when you're provoking a country with a missile defense and a capable nuclear arsenal.

By summer 2014 and probably during high level peace negotiations Israel will strike Iran/Persia which could bring Muslim allies into another Middle East War.      The total destruction of Damascus has been averted to date because of two overpowering Middle East conditions. First, the Bible indicates that an alliance or confederacy will develop within the surrounding countries that encompass Israel.      The Middle East conspiracy of Psalm 83:4 says, “COME, let us wipe them out as a nation so that Israel’s name will no longer be remembered. (5) For they have conspired with one mind; they form an alliance against you. (12) Let us seize God’s pastures for ourselves.”

Second, every state around Israel respects the powerful war capacity of Israel and their nuclear power. The conspiracy pact does not appear to exist today. Military logic knows there is no way to win against vastly superior weaponry and such a pact would amount to suicide.

In other words the one main focus that is holding back this confederacy from forming a league is the Arabs inability to answer Israel's nuclear weapons threat. Until Muslim power is equal a war covenant, alliance or confederacy among Arab nations with “one consent” is not likely.

When in place the consent agreement will be to wipe out the nation of Israel and erase her name and land from history.

If Israel's enemies develop nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction (WMD), the confederacy makes sense. Israel's intelligence will be first to know when nuclear power is achieved and seek a solution to a nuclear holocaust endeavoring to get the U.S. to take action.

The rhetoric of the Muslims is sure to change as the leadership of most of the Muslim nations around Israel has removed the moderate leadership to a radical Islamic role. When they unite behind the nuclear weapons indicated in Psalm 83, the world will see the difference and relations will be changed for every country.

The Isaiah 17 prophecy indicates we may witness the shocking end of a famous capital city. Seven million Syrians have been displaced. What does this mean for the rest of the world?

The completion of this event provides one of the last major pre-requisites in Bible prophecy for the start of the Great Tribulation. When you see this, be ready for the “beginning of sorrows.”
