Archery 101: Shooting form: Mastering the unruly elbow, continued

MERIDIAN —     To check the draw arm elbow, pull back to full draw (string touching the end of the nose) and the true anchor point with both eyes closed. Open the shooting eye only. Look through the scope of the front sight (ignore the pins) and focus on the target–not the peep! If the peep appears to be left or right, move the elbow–don’t move the head! If the peep is too high or too low, move the peep–don’t move the head! Many shooters will attempt to correct the flaw by moving the head up and down or leaning into the string to line up the peep. The problem is not the head. The problem is a lazy elbow!

Every degree (minute) of angle off center with a lazy elbow will also increase muscle fatigue and spread the shot group. Muscle memory learned the wrong way will subconsciously adjust the head to make the peep line up. The only way to master the lazy elbow is blind baling!

A simple experiment (probably not for beginners): Begin shooting a group (both eyes open) with the elbow cocked and locked at twelve o’ clock high. Next, move the elbow one minute of angle for each subsequent shot group (3-5 arrows) and watch the groups spread and move laterally(right for right hand shooters–left for lefties).

Another way to check the angle of the draw arm elbow is to check the center shot of the bow. If the sight pins are to the right of the center shot of the bow for a right hand shooter the elbow is lazy (left for a left hand shooter).

However, if the draw length is too long, the sight pins will be the opposite from that of a lazy elbow, i.e. left of the center shot for the right hand shooter (right for a lefty).

The center shot is the visual alignment of the cams, string, and the arrow at rest with the center of the bow riser and limbs. Ideally, the sight pins should be in perfect alignment with the string, arrow at rest, cams, riser and limbs.
