Frogs in my kitchen

MERIDIAN — It’s frogging time right now! And no I’m not talking about fried frog legs, but Scum Frogs in Leisa Cunningham’s kitchen. And those ravenous post spawn bass are eating up those frogs, especially Scum Frogs of all varieties and delicacies. But how did frogs get in Cunningham’s kitchen? Well, when you’re married to “The Frog Man”, Dan Cunningham, owner of Southern Lure Company which manufactures the world famous Scum Frogs, then you’re bound to have a few frogs in your kitchen and maybe even in  your cookbook.

    After spending a few years in the Alabama Public School system teaching Home Economics, Culinary Arts and Interior Design, Leisa met and married Dan Cunningham, of Columbus, and began work at the Frog Factory as office and shipping manager. After learning all about frogs, including manufacture and distribution, Leisa decided to tell the story of her husband and how he came about making frogs so she published a cookbook that is very enlightening, “Frogs in My Kitchen.”

    “This book contains the two loves of my life: my husband and my hobby of cooking,” said Cunningham. And the cook book has become a success while providing down home recipes from Cunningham, family and friends. But perhaps the best part of the book, at least for me, was the story of the Scum Frog, including its birth in Dan Cunningham’s kitchen and the subsequent success that it had all over the country. It was only a couple of years ago that I learned that my favorite Scum Frogs were made in Columbus.

    Cunningham’s book is divided into sections such as Appetizers and Beverages, Soups and Salads, Main Dishes and so forth. Each tab features pictures of anglers, people and successful frogs, rats and others who’ve played a big part in the success of the Southern Lure Company and Scum Frogs. And on the back of each tab is a unique story telling more about those products.

    In addition to the wonderful recipes, anglers learn about the birth of the Scumdog Walker and walking the dog. There’s also a story about a mouse in Cunningham’s kitchen, actually it’s a rat! A Bassrat to be exact. And oh how many bass have I caught on that Bassrat!

    And in between the tabs and stories are glorious recipes. I can just taste Momma’s Old Fashioned Teacakes and some of that blueberry cobbler now. And the Sourdough Bread and Pecan Crusted Fish Fillets with Butter Sauce have got my mouth watering too. There’s so many lip smacking recipes there’s just too many to name here.

    What more could you ask for than mixing our favorite pastime, bass fishing, with cooking and eating. There’s just nothing better than catching a limit of nice bass on Scum Frogs and then cooking them up fresh out of the water. “Frogs In My Kitchen” is a surefire hit, and will enlighten, entertain, and provide you with some scrumptious recipes for eating your favorite meals or desserts.
