Archery Addicts Anonymous — Lesson 020

Shooting the GAP

MERIDIAN —     Beginners should choose a basic single pin sight (sighted in at twenty yards) for hunting out to twenty-five yards. Using the “Gap” aiming method the theoretical flight of the arrow should follow an arched path that should put the arrow inside a nine inch circle out to thirty yards, depending on the speed of the arrow.  The “Gap” method is an extension of the “Missing Link” method (review lesson 15).

“Gap” shooting with a single fixed pin sight is an excellent exercise to help develop a perfect sight picture. Begin with a nine inch pie plate and draw a six inch circle in the center.

With the bow sighted-in dead-on at twenty yards, shoot a single arrow beginning at five yards.  Move back two and one-half yards each time and shoot a single arrow each time until the thirty yard mark has been reached. Always aim at the center of the target face.

There should be eleven holes in the nine inch pie plate, depending upon the speed of the arrow. Faster arrow speed might put eleven arrows inside a six inch or smaller circle. Slower arrows may fall below the nine inch circle as the distance increases.

Keep a log of every eleven shot sequence and make a line graph to help visualize the process.
