Susan Gregory; successful lady angler

Mike Giles

Susan Gregory eased the trolling motor into the water and began probing the brackish waters of Cowan Bayou on the Lower Pearl much like a skilled surgeon. Gregory’s precise pitching and casting abilities allowed her to make pinpoint casts into the shallow water spawning grounds of finicky springtime bass. As she pitched her craw worm next to a brush top and gently shook it, a nice three pound bass inhaled it and headed to parts unknown.

Almost instantly the pro-angler set the hook and drove the steel home, deep into the jaw of the hungry bass. Though the bass fought wildly, Gregory quickly wore it down and brought him into the boat. After admiring and photographing the bass, she released the feisty lunker back into the brackish water to fight another day.

Though she was only fishing for fun on this day, she was engaged in a friendly competition with an “outdoor celebrity” to see who would be the best angler on that day. Gregory continued to carve up the shoreline cover with precise casts and drew strikes almost all day long. Though the area readily yields limits of small bass in the pound to pound and a quarter ranges, this lady angler was having a field day breaking that weight barrier.

By the end of the day Gregory had caught more than a limit of quality bass in the 2 1/2 to 3 pound range and had made a believer of quite a few observers, though her celebrity partner probably didn’t want to admit it.

Early spark

Susan Gregory, of Kiln, is now living a dream that was born during a childhood spent near New Orleans. Though her parents carried her on boating outings, fishing was not a priority and freshwater fishing for bass was not an option. Somehow the youngster had a spark born deep inside that eventually flamed into a passion for bass fishing and a dream was born.

“Once I found out about bass tournaments I knew that I wanted to be a professional angler,” exclaimed Gregory excitedly. With a family and children at home, however, the dream had to wait a little while longer. Once her children grew up she was free to pursue her dream and it has now become a reality. This talented lady angler has gone up against both men and women and been very successful at catching bass when others couldn’t.

Though she didn’t fish for bass while growing up, she has made up for it by fishing both local and regional tournaments in South Mississippi and across the South. Throughout her career she has consistently caught fish and competed with the best anglers around the country. The experiences she has gained from it have been invaluable and she’s been very successful in the process.

Gregory fished the 2006 inaugural season of the Women’s Bassmaster Tour (WBT) and is a four time qualifier for the Mississippi State BASS Federation National Championship. She also has two first-place finishes and 7 Top 20 finishes in the Women’s Bass Fishing Association to go with three Top 50 finishes in the WBT national tournament trail.

Top trophy

Gregory’s largest bass taken to date was an 8.75 pound largemouth caught on a swimbait. Though Gregory has been very successful at fishing and competing in national bass tournaments, she still has a few dreams on her list of things to achieve. Qualifying and competing in the Bass Master’s Classic is at the top of the list and something that only a precious few anglers have achieved. Mississippi has produced two World Bass Champions up until now. Paul Elias and Bob Hamilton both won the Bass Master’s Classic Championship and consistently competed and beat the best anglers in the world.

Gregory has consistently caught bass and proven to be a worthy angler on a variety of lakes around the country. She has been a role model for young anglers as she tours the professional bass fishing trail and conducts seminars and makes public appearances frequently.

Susan Gregory has set her sights on one of the loftiest goals in the professional bass fishing world, qualifying for the Bass Master’s Classic. By the looks of her track record to date, I wouldn’t bet against this lady from Kiln, Mississippi!
