Kids’ Bream Tournament Scheduled



The nineteenth annual Sandy Ridge Bream Tournament for kids is coming up May 10, 2008. Details will appear on this page next week. Mark the calendar and make plans now to take a youngster fishing for prizes and fast fun.



Tip of the week

If you have trouble sharpening your knives on a stone, try passing the blade over the stone at a steeper (larger) angle. For instance if you have been holding the blade at a 20 degree angle try a few strokes at a 30 degree angle instead and test for sharpness. Using an angle that is too shallow is a common detriment to getting a sharp blade.



Did you know?

Maps are necessities to outdoorsmen. Sketches, road maps and topographical maps guide us to limitless places. The oldest known map is a clay tablet in Iraq that was made in a bout 2300 B.C. It shows directions to a wealthy man’s estate.



Beginner’s Corner

Fish hooks have come a long way since the first fish was landed with a sharp bone or branched twig. Treble hooks and long shanked hooks will hold more bait and are easier to twist out of a small fish’s mouth. Minnows can be caught with very tiny hooks baited with bits of bread. The new sharply curved hooks, called circle hooks, will set themselves once the fish bites, making it unnecessary to yank back on the rod or pole.
