Opposes MUW name change

It disturbs me that MUW President Claudia Limbert and her public relations gurus are promulgating the idea that changing the name of Mississippi University for Women is "non debatable" or a "done deal." I would most definitely like to debate this issue because I oppose a name change at this time.

The current administration has not put forth enough effort to properly and adequately promote — much less celebrate! — the unique and outstanding benefits that a MUW education currently offers prospective students. The university should be focusing on effective recruiting and going after the best and the brightest students throughout the South. The university should be touting its exceptional programs, faculty, traditions and history. The university should be utilizing the network of alumnae and loyal supporters who are more than willing to spread the word about all The W offers and share their considerable gifts and talents with MUW.

The university should seriously study the example of Texas Women's University and what TWU learned about how to successful market and grow while continuing to use "women" in its name.

There is much that could be done and should be done to keep the polish on our "jewel of the South." The MUW administration should be focusing on what sets MUW apart from other educational institutions, not guessing and hoping that changing the name will be a magical answer to growth, recruitment and financial issues. MUW needs smart, effective leadership, not smoke and mirrors.
