Not buying it
By Craig Ziemba / guest columnist
The Democrats have made a transparently conscious effort this week to recast themselves as the party of faith and family. One carefully scripted speech after another declared that it’s okay for evangelicals and Catholics to vote Democratic because Democrats care about children.
Hillary Clinton’s video tribute began and ended with the story of mothers and grandmothers loving their daughters and raising them to be strong, successful mothers themselves. Michelle Obama’s speech was inspiring. Her children were bright and beautiful, and the image of a loving family when their father appeared on the big screen via teleconference was a public relation dream come true.
But scratch beneath the surface of the rhetoric about health care and education for children, and there’s something tragically wrong with this picture. Amid all of this week’s talk about children, children, children, 40 million American babies since Roe v. Wade whose lives were ended before they drew their first breath were deliberately ignored. Evidently the Democratic Party’s support of abortion transcends its own self-professed love of children.
Ironically, even as the Obamas have become this generation’s African-American success story, Barak Obama has championed the very industry that kills more African-Americans than heart disease, cancer, AIDS, and violence combined. In what can accurately be labeled genocide, abortionists have killed thirteen million black babies since 1973. Blacks are 12 percent of the population but account for 31 percent of all abortions.
Any Democrats outraged that 13 million black Americans were killed? Michelle? Hillary? Anyone?
On the contrary, Michelle Obama has proudly announced to cheering supporters that her husband is a champion of abortion. His voting record bears this out. As a state senator in Illinois, he twice voted against the Born Alive Infant Protection Act, and was the only opponent to publicly support infanticide on the senate floor. The proposed Born Alive Act stated that, “A live child born as a result of an abortion shall be fully recognized as a human person and accorded immediate protection under the law.”
This is graphic, but the facts must be understood: Sometimes a baby is completely delivered during late term abortions before the abortionist can kill it (usually during an attempted partial birth abortion). The Born Alive Act prohibited abortionists from killing these fully delivered babies. Barak Obama stated in a Chicago Tribune interview in 2004 that he voted against the bill because it “would have taken away from doctors their professional judgment when a fetus is viable.” Call it no unwanted child left behind.
The bright, shining family image of Barak Obama stands in schizophrenic contrast to his long standing support not only for early term abortions, but also for partial birth abortion and even infanticide. How can this be? I don’t doubt that Michelle and Barak Obama love their two adorable daughters. I don’t doubt that Hillary loves Chelsea. So how could Democrats be so insensitive to the plight of millions of unborn children? As Sheila Massy, founder of African-Americans for Life states, “These babies have civil rights too.”
The truth is that these unborn children are sacrificed on the altar of politics. Barak Obama knows that speaking out against abortion would fracture the Democratic Party and lessen his chance to become President. Although he claims to hear the voice of the downtrodden and preaches a messianic sermon of hope and promise, when it comes to the unborn (or partially or recently born), he suddenly turns both deaf and mute.
The Democratic Party can try all it wants to win Evangelical and Catholic voters, but we’re not buying it.
