A proud endorser of the Confederate cause

As a former resident of Lauderdale County who reads The Meridian Star on the Web, let me say that I was much surprised to find Assistant Editor Steve Gillespie’s attack on both Confederate Memorial Day and the Mississippi state flag (“How about an alternative?”) in the April 23 edition.
In his column, Mr. Gillespie suggests that the state Legislature should consider establishing an “alternative holiday” to Confederate Memorial Day because honoring Confederates with a separate Memorial Day “endorses their cause.”
Mr. Gillespie, I have news for you. Most of us who are descended from Confederate soldiers are proud of the fact that our ancestors had the courage to fight and die for what they believed in, and we do indeed “endorse their cause.” And, might I add, there is not one thing that you scalawags can do to change our minds.
In fact, I think that the Star would be well advised to find an “alternative” to politically correct editors who attack our Southern traditions and the “Confederate symbol” on the Mississippi state flag. Perhaps Mr. Gillespie would feel more at home working for The Clarion-Ledger, where “birds of a feather, flock together.”
As to the state flag, which incorporates the Confederate battle flag, long may it wave!
