Mr. Jack W. Lemmons of Meridian, Miss., quietly passed away at his residence Friday, Dec. 7, 2012.
Funeral services for Mr. Lemmons will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11 at Central United Methodist Church preceded by 9 a.m. visitation also at the church. Dr. Bob Rambo, Rev. Jimmy Harrison and Jim Wall will officiate the service. Interment follows at 2:30 p.m.; Odd Fellows Cemetery: Starkville, Miss. Stephens Funeral Home is coordinating respective arrangements.
Mr. Lemmons, a U.S. Naval veteran of WWII, served on the destroyer USS Metcalf in the Pacific Theatre. At the age of 17, Jack felt his call of duty soon after the historic attack on Pearl Harbor. After proudly serving his country, he graduated high school and enrolled in college at Mississippi State University where he obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. In college, Jack was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. He was selected as a Professional Engineer prior to becoming a long-range planning engineer with BellSouth for a 37-year career until retirement.
Mr. Lemmons, a committed community member, volunteered with several service and civic organizations, devoting much of his time to Meals on Wheels, The Telephone Pioneers and Lauderdale Habitat for Humanity, as well as his church.
He is survived by Martha Lemmons, his beloved wife of 61 years; sons, Steve and his wife Jan, Bob and his wife Peggy; four grandchildren: Stephan Lemmons, Adam Lemmons, Laura Lemmons and Lamar Hickman. He is also survived by his sister Jere Gale and her husband Ed and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward B. and Jeanette Lemmons and sister Jeanette Dennis.
John Robert Gale, Bronson Gale, David Rosenbaum, Courtney Cunningham, Bill Buchanan and C.D. Smith will serve as Pall Bearers. Honorary bearers include: Representatives of the Shields Class, Telephone Pioneers and Habitat for Humanity home owners.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be submitted to Central United Methodist Church, Lauderdale Habitat for Humanity or the College or University of your choice.
