A service celebrating the life of Lillian Kennedy will be held Sunday, at 2:30 p.m., at Newton County Funeral Home North with Rev. Jimmy Harrison officiating. Ms. Kennedy’s cremains will be interred in the Hickory Cemetery with Newton County Funeral Home North in charge of arrangements.
Ms. Kennedy, 90, passed away peacefully in the care of Covenant Hospice on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012. Lillian was born Aug. 1, 1922, in Hickory to John and Pauline Monroe. Lillian worked in Meridian and F.W. Williams Insurance Agency for most of her working career. After retiring, she moved to Chattanooga, Tenn., to work for the Orange Grove Center for the Mentally Handicapped. She found her work there to be most rewarding, enhancing the life of the residents. In 1988, she received the award for Outstanding Residential Staff Person of the Year. She remained in their employment until the age of 70, at which time she returned to her hometown of Hickory enjoying her home, family, and friends there for many years. She then became a resident of Aldersgate for Senior Living in Meridian, and enjoyed making new friends, playing Scrabble, and shopping. Due to health reasons, at the age of 89, she moved to Orange Beach, Ala., to be cared for by her daughter and son-in-law. Lillian was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and follower of Christ. Lillian was a long time member of Hickory Baptist Church. Her hobbies were sewing and reading, enjoying a special affinity for biographies of Presidents and First Ladies.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Judith and Perry Williams; granddaughter, (Roger) Jennifer, great-granddaughters, Ansley and Madison, and great-grandson, Jack; granddaughters, (Judith) Stacy and Kimberly, great-granddaughters, Ashley and Taylor, and great-great-granddaughter, Keira; grandson, (John) Scott and granddaughter, Michelle, and great-grandson Trey, and great-granddaughter Kayla; nieces: Kristie Blount and Lisa Burrell and their families; and nephew, Carl E. Williamson and family.
She was preceded in death by sons: Roger E. Kennedy and John F. Kennedy; grandsons: John Kennedy Jr. and Douglas G. Gray; parents, John and Pauline Monroe; brothers: Elliot, Charleton, Julian, and John Jr.; and, sisters: Grace Williamson and Jean Monroe.
