William Russ Simpkins, M.D., age 76, of Livingston, Ala., died Thursday, September 5, 2013, at home. He practiced medicine in Livingston for 39 years and in Demopolis, Ala. for four years. He attended the University of West Alabama, Auburn University, and graduated from the University of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis, Tenn. He interned at John B. Gaston Hospital in Memphis and extended study at St. Jude Hospital. He enjoyed his association with the University of West Alabama and especially enjoyed his 35 years with the UWA athletics as team physician. He relished his time on the Simpkins Farm. His hobbies included tennis, reading, and sports.
He was preceded in death by his parents, R.E. and Thelma W. Simpkins, his brother Bobby Simpkins, and grandson Cole Simpkins. He is survived by his wife Carole Pope Simpkins; sister, Virginia Ozment of Sumterville, Ala.; sons, Russ (Tina) Simpkins of Southside, Ala., Temp (Nicole) Simpkins of Opelika, Ala.; daughters, Kate Simpkins of Boston, Mass., Margo (Tommy) Bryan of Livingston, Ala. and Jennifer (Bob) Tremayne of Buckeye, Ariz.; grandchildren, Kane (Paige) Simpkins, Natalie Simpkins, Jackson and Thomas Bryan, Taylor and Patrick Simpkins.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, at 10 a.m. at the Livingston United Methodist Church with Reverend Gail Baughman officiating. A private internment service will precede the Celebration of Life Service. Visitation will be Sunday, Sept. 8 from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall in Livingston. Bumpers Funeral Home of York, Ala. is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the Livingston United Methodist Church or a favorite charity.
