MERIDIAN —     Services for J.W. Thrash will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Clarke Venable Baptist Church with burial in the Decatur City Cemetery. Rev. Billy Williams will be officiating with Milling Funeral Home of Union in charge of the arrangements.

    Mr. Thrash, 86, of Decatur, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013 at Beehive Home of Newton.

    Mr. Thrash was a veteran of WWII in the US Navy on board the USS Admiralty Island. He also served as Mayor of Decatur for 12 years and was the owner of Decatur Insurance and Realty. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from East Central Community College and served as President of East Central Planning Commission.

    J.W. was the voice of football games at Newton County High School and East Central Community College for 50 years and worked for the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce. He was a member of Clarke Venable Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.

    Survivors include two sons, Jim Thrash and wife Sharon of Collierville, Tenn. and Terry Thrash of Pensacola, Fla.; two granddaughters, Mary Short and Emily Thrash; one grandson, Jay Thrash; and one sister, Marie Davis of Louisville.

    Mr. Thrash was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Thrash.

    Pallbearers: Eddie Thorne, Graham Clarke, Doug Morgan, Roy Blackburn, Mark Buntyn and Mike Blount.

    Visitation will be held on Saturday from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Clarke Venable Baptist Church.
