MERIDIAN —     Services for Billy Samuel Calvert will be held Saturday, at 10 a.m., at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Carl White and Rev. Franklin Denham officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery with Robert Barham Family Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Calvert, 81, of Meridian, died Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at Anderson Regional Medical Center. He served in the United States Army First Calvary Division in the Korean War from 1952 to 1954 laying telephone communication lines. After being honorably discharged from the military in 1954 as a Staff Sergeant, he was employed as a manager at S.H. Kress Company for sixteen years in Birmingham, Ala., and Sumter, S.C. He returned to Brewton, Ala. to open J. Randall, a variety store which grew into a small chain of seven stores located in small towns throughout Alabama. These stores were open for 25 years. After retiring, he returned to Meridian where he restored a historic Queen Anne Victorian home. Having an interest in both history and antique furniture, he enjoyed the hobby of re?nishing antique furniture. He was a member of Highland Baptist Church where he faithfully served as a lifetime deacon emeritus. Mr. Calvert had a robust love for life, his family, and his Lord Jesus Christ. He was the very definition of what it means to be a humble servant of Christ. He has left a legacy of honor and integrity for the family whom he has left behind and who will miss him tremendously.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Martha Charlene Calvert; his son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Melanie Calvert of Jackson; grandchildren: Graham Calvert and wife Meredith Calvert of Salt Lake City, Utah, Justin Calvert of Chicago, Ill., Amy Campbell and husband Lane Campbell of Vicksburg, and John Calvert of Starkville; great-grandchildren: Carr Calvert, Emory Calvert, and Ellis Campbell; sister, Ruby Leach of Century, Fla.; and, numerous other nieces, nephews, and cousins that were very special to him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Virginia Calvert; and his son, Jimmy Calvert.

Pallbearers will be Graham Calvert, Justin Calvert, John Calvert, Lane Campbell, Andrew Post, Gary Post, Charlie Munoz, Eddie Snodgrass, and Charles Snodgrass.

The family requests memorials be made to the Highland Baptist Church Building Fund and Gideon’s International.

Family and friends may sign the online guest book at robertbarhamffh.com.

Visitation will be today, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
