MERIDIAN —     Mrs. Retha Deal, 100, passed away on May 23, in Brewton, Ala.  Visitation will be held at Stephens Funeral Home in Meridian on Tuesday at 10 am, with the service at 11a.m. Interment will be at Magnolia Cemetery beside her first husband, Johnnie Kidd.

Mrs. Deal was born Retha Ellen Snowden in Collinsville on February 12, 1913, the oldest child of Ransom and “Rissie” Snowden.  She became a registered nurse at Rush Hospital, meeting and marrying Mr. Kidd on June 27, 1937. The Kidd family moved to Waynesboro in 1951 to run the Pan Am (later Amoco) distributorship.

After Mr. Kidd’s death in 1953, Mrs. Deal gave up her nursing career to run the distributorship for 37 years, racking up sales and service awards and the respect of the male-dominated national company.  She remained in Waynesboro until 2005, making many friends in the area.

“Mema,” as she was called by her grandchildren, was known for her generosity, her gentle nature, her dignified presence, and her prowess in the kitchen. She especially loved flowers and dishes and sheets, but also craved returning to Collinsville to wet a fishing hook in the family pond. Above all else, her family was most important and she had a hand in guiding all of them, whether they were brothers or sisters, nieces or nephews, grandchildren or great-grandchildren.

In addition to her first husband and parents, Mrs. Deal is preceded in death by her second husband, Walter Deal; sisters Eloise Culpepper, Lula Belle Johnston, Katie Brady, Sarah Harrison, and Wynelle Snowden; brothers William Gray Snowden, Hailey Snowden, Virgil Snowden, Raymond Snowden, and an unnamed infant.

Pallbearers will be Quintin Ayers, David Crenshaw, Stephen Dailey, Cameron Lodge, and Jackie and Kenny Snowden.  Honorary pallbearers are J.B. Griffith and Lee Davidson.
