Eugene Grey Smith


    QUITMAN - Graveside services for Eugene Grey “Gene” Smith will be held today, at 3 p.m., at Jones Chapel Church of God Cemetery, Meridian, with the Rev. Pam Randall officiating. Wright’s Funeral Home of Quitman is in charge of arrangements.

    Mr. Smith, 93, passed away Saturday, April 6, 2013, at Rush Foundation Hospital in Meridian. He was retired from the Clarkdale Water Association. He was a very active member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church for over 45 years. In addition to his church, he loved his family, helping people and vegetable gardening. Mr. Smith leaves a lasting legacy of being a dedicated servant of those around him and to those in need. His devotion to his faith was exemplified in his daily life and through the love for his family and friends.

    Mr. Smith was blessed to be happily married for 71 years to Natalie Lucas Smith and joined her in Heaven on what would have been their 73rd wedding anniversary.

    Survivors include two daughters: Martha Satterwhite and husband Wayne of Birmingham, Ala., and Jennifer St. John and husband Ron of Meridian; one granddaughter, Rachel Anne Satterwhite of Birmingham, Ala.; one brother, James Glen Smith of Quitman; and, numerous nieces and nephews.

    The family gratefully acknowledges special caregivers and friends, Rowena Back, Lavern Price, Faith Ready and John Price for their love and devotion.

    Pallbearers include Gary Downey, George Belvin, Jerry Pope, Mike Lucas, Wade Shirley and Michael Lucas.

    The family requests memorials be made to Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, 6055 Hwy 145 South, Meridian, MS.

    Friends may sign an online register book at

    Visitation will be today, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., at the funeral home in Quitman.
