Earl L. Johnson

MERIDIAN — Services for Earl L. Johnson will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Mark Flynn will officiate with Barham Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

    Mr. Johnson, 89, passed away Sept. 29, 2013 at the State Veterans Home in Kosciusko.

    Born April 28, 1924 in Hobken, Ga. to the late Herman Lloyd and Eva Howard Johnson, he graduated Homerville High School in 1941. While attending college, he enlisted in the US Army and served his country in Milan, Naples and Rome, Italy, Oran, Algeria, and Athens, Greece. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 30, 1945 and resumed his education at the University of Georgia, where he pledged Sigma Chi Fraternity. He graduated with a bachelor’s in Business Administration.

    Mr. Johnson retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad in 1984 and enjoyed serving in various capacities at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Love’s Kitchen, Sons of the American Revolution, and Meridian Community College Foundation. At MCC, he taught many adult students to read in the literacy program.  Pres. George Bush appointed him a “Point of Light” in 1992.

    Survivors include his wife, Caroline Barnard Johnson, of Kosciusko; his son, Coleman Earl Johnson, of Ragley, La.; a daughter, Becky Tomerlin (Ronnie), of Meridian; one grandson, Lloyd Mayatt of Pensacola, Fla. and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

    He is preceded in death by his parents and by his two sisters, Laurelle Lee and Juanita Guice.

    Pallbearers will be Nelson Hall, Tom Beasley, Dan Rader, Wade Sims, Jr, Winky Glover III, and Dunn Mallard.

    Visitation will be at 1 p.m. on the day of service at Trinity Presbyterian Church.
