Audrey Elizabeth McKee Scarborough

MERIDIAN —     Audrey Scarborough, surrounded by her husband, Thomas Franklin Scarborough, and her loving daughters, Janet and Cindy, went home to be with her Lord on Feb. 4, 2014, at JG Alexander Nursing Center, after a long and brave battle with Parkinson’s Disease, West Nile Virus, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and a massive stroke.

    She was preceded in death by her late parents Odell and Louise McKee, her younger brother Jack McKee (and wife Dorothy). She is survived by her husband, Thomas, married for 61 and a half  years, her daughter Janet Green and her husband, Dennis, a minister of Tillar, Ark., and Cindy Canoy and her husband, Robert, a minister and Dean of the School of Divinity at Gardner-Webb University of Shelby, N.C. Her grandchildren are Ashley Powell and her husband Justin, Staff Sergeant in the Air Force and their son Landon, all of Whiteman Air Force Base in Knob Knoster, Mo.; Rob Canoy, a Coast Guard Lieutenant JAG Officer of Boston, Mass.; and Ryan Canoy, a student and basketball player at Barton College, Wilson, N.C. She is also survived by her brother, Hulon McKee (and wife Nina), her sister-n-law Frances Scarborough, as well as many dear nieces, nephews, and cousins.  

    Audrey was a native of Newton County who lived in Germany with her husband Thomas during the Korean War, lived in Arkansas, Clarksdale, and Newton County, where she worked as a Special Education Teacher at Coahoma County High School and Newton Public Schools, as a Case worker at Delta Manor Care Facility in Clarksdale, and retired with the State of Mississippi. Audrey was a graduate of Hickory High School, East Mississippi Junior College, and Delta State University (Bachelor and Master’s degree).  

    Besides her work as an educator, she was a licensed cosmetologist and an active charter member of Grace United Baptist Church. Audrey loved the outdoors, spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandson, watching her grandsons play basketball, sharing a meal with her close friends, shopping with her girls and granddaughter, traveling all over the world and laughing with her family and friends.

    Audrey’s funeral service will be held at Grace United Baptist Church at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 1:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. at Grace United Baptist Church. Dr. Robert W. Canoy, Reverend Dennis Lee Green, Reverend Robert Rowzee, Reverend Mark McDonald, and Reverend Phillip Gandy will conduct the service. Burial will be in Lebanon Cemetery with Newton County South in charge of the arrangements.  

    Pallbearers will be Rob Canoy, Ryan Canoy, Justin Powell, Mac Robinson, Max Johnson, Richard Harris, Mike McNeil and John Paul McKee. Honorary Pallbearers will be Ashley Green Powell, Senator Phillip Gandy, Paula Gray Freeman, Joann McKee Burks, Sidney McNeil, Tom Gray, Tim Gray, Tony McKee, and Senior Adult Sunday School Class of Grace United Baptist Church.

    The family requests that memorial donations be made to Grace United Baptist Church, Decatur; Gideons International; JG Alexander Nursing Center, Union; or Quality Hospice, Philadelphia.
