David Shumate

MERIDIAN —     Services for David Shumate will be held Saturday, February 8, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. in the chapel of Barham Funeral Home. Bro. Jack Kern will officiate and burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memory Garden.

    Mr. Shumate, 87, of Meridian, passed away at Anderson’s on February 6.

    Mr. Shumate was born and raised in Meridian.  After high school, he joined the US Navy, where he served his country for more than 20 years.  After his time in the Navy, he returned home and worked as a driver for Fruge’ Oil, where he retired.  He was a lover of music, in particular, Bluegrass.  He is survived by his sister-in-law, Brenda Shumate; his granddaughter, Jennifer Cleckey; his nieces and nephews, George Woodall, David Woodall, Susan Parker, Mary Wiedman, Curtis Shumate, Louise Shumate Stevens, Eddie Shumate, Buddy Simmons, Barbara Flemming, and Janice Zirkenback, as well as numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

    Mr. Shumate was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis Z. and Mary Shumate; his wife, Hazel; his brothers Curtis Jr., Bud, and Edwin; and his sisters, Mildred Shumate and Cookie Woodall.

    Visitation will be Friday from 5-8 at Barham Funeral Home.
