Johnny L. Baucum

MERIDIAN —     Services for Johnny L. Baucum will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Newton County Funeral Home North Chapel with Rev. Mark Vincent and Rev. Mark McDonald officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery with Newton County Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.  

    Mr. Baucum, 82 of Newton, died Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at his residence. He had a strong work ethic. He retired from the Post Office at Newton where he was a rural letter carrier. He also was a cattle farmer and gardener. He had also worked for the city of Newton and La-Z-Boy South. He enjoyed fishing and hunting in his younger years. He was a member and deacon at Clarke-Venable Baptist Church at Decatur, where he served faithfully as long as his health permitted. He was a member of the American Legion Post #89 at Decatur and served his country willingly in the U.S. Air Force. 

    Survivors include his wife of over 57 years, Eleanor Harmon Baucum of Newton; one daughter, Helen B. Watkins of Newton; one son, Johnny Lavelle Baucum Jr. and wife Paula of Newton; two grandchildren, Charlotte Watkins of Newton and Jennifer Watkins of Newton and one great-grandchild, Madison Reece Watkins of Newton.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, Calvin and Velma Ritchie Baucum; five brothers: Lester, Hilton, Billy Wayne, Bobby Ray and James Olen Baucum; one sister, Olivia “Libby” Parks; two infant children; one grandchild, W.C. Watkins; one great-grandchild, Andrew Bryan and one son-in-law, Albert S. Watkins.

    Memorials may be made to the Gideons International, Inc., Newton Camp, P.O. Box 297, Newton, MS 39345 or to the charity of choice.

    Visitation will be Friday from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at Newton County Funeral Home North.
