Dr. Jennie Ruth Scott Crump Calbert

MERIDIAN —     Services for Dr. Jennie Ruth Scott Crump Calbert will be held Tuesday, at 11 a.m., at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Rev. Elbirst Mason officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Enterprise Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

    Jennie Ruth Scott Crump, a native of Meridian, attended Haven Teachers College and Conservatory of Music from kindergarten to eleventh grade and graduated from Sumner High School in St. Louis, Mo. She received an A.B. degree from Rust College in Holly Springs; a certificate in Christian Education from Scarritt College in Nashville, Tenn.; and, a master’s in education from Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Ala. Further studies were done at Denver University in Denver, Colo.; Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa.; University of Southern Mississippi and the University of Mississippi. Rust College awarded her the Doctorate of Letters degree in 1978.

    Dr. Crump was an employee of Meridian Public School System where she served as teacher, principal of Wechsler Elementary School and as coordinator of early childhood education. She also served for two administrations as secretary of the Mississippi Teachers Association; two years as chairperson of the elementary division of Mississippi Association of Educators; historian of Mississippi Association of Children Under Six, and a member of the Public Policy and Legislative Committee.

    As a United Methodist, Dr. Crump served on local, district conferences and the national level. As conference Director of Youth, she served as president of the National Council of Youth Workers, district president of the Meridian District Woman’s and Woman’s Society of Christian Service, and president of the conference for two quadrennials. She was three times a delegate to the general conference and she served on the Commission of Program and Agenda; General Board of Evangelism; Ecumenical Affairs; Program Council; Committee on Membership Manuals and Investigation of the Methodist Publishing House.

    Dr. Crump was Rust College Alumni of the Year; is also included in Personalities of the South; Who’s Who in Women of the World, Who’s Who of Intellectuals of the World. She served as Rust College Trustee Associate, Trustee Wood Junior College and 1979 Dean of Mississippi Conference School of Christian Mission. She has also held the position of president of the Independent State YMCA Board, member of MACUS Public Policy and Legislative Committee, chairperson of the committee for writing the 1980 Kindergarten Legislative Bill, member of the Southeastern Jurisdiction Legislative Task Force and 1980 Dean of Mississippi Conference School of Christian Mission.

    Dr. Crump was married to Rev. A. W. Crump Sr.

    Survivors include a son, Rev. Dr. A. W. Crump Jr., Minister and Associate Professor of the History and Philosophy Department at Jackson State University; a daughter-in-law, Lois A. Crump; four grandchildren: Lois A. Crump, Dr. Helen J. Crump, Alfonso W. Crump III, and Christopher H. Crump, all of Jackson.

    Visitation will be Monday, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Enterprise Funeral Home, and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.
