Susan Shoemaker Hume

Susan Shoemaker Hume, 69, of Mentone, Ala. died unexpectedly following surgery on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014 in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Susan was born Nov. 25 1944 in Memphis, Tenn. to William Millard and Alice Vivian Shoemaker. She was a middle child between her older brother William, Jr (Bill) and her younger brother Richard (Rick). She grew up in Jackson and Meridian, Miss.

Susan graduated from Meridian High School and, like many in her family attended The University of Mississippi. She was a member of Phi Mu Sorority, and graduated with a Bachelors of Education in 1966 and a Masters in Reading Improvement in 1968. She began a teaching career in Pensacola, Fla.  She then accepted a position with the Department of Defense Overseas School System in Germany to teach for 4 years at elementary schools on several US Army bases.  Prior to returning to the U.S. Susan traveled extensively throughout Europe.

Susan met and married Bob Hume in 1981. She was the owner of Say Cheese Wine and Cheese Shop in Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., and then Bay Gourmet Café in Bluewater Bay Resort.  She was a certified Master Gardener in Okaloosa County Florida.  She established a mentoring program for new master gardener applicants and developed a program with Habitat for Humanity to provide landscaping materials so that each Habitat house would have an established yard.

In 1998, Susan and Bob began their quest to find property and build a home on the brow in Mentone, Ala. The house was completed in 2006. She began planting their yard; gleefully ignoring any part of her Master Gardener training that did not fit her vision of what their yard should look like. A potted Plumeria tree bought in Hawaii resides there to this day and blooms almost every year out on their deck.

Susan is survived by her husband Bob and her brothers Bill (Sally) and Rick. She has extended family and friends scattered all over. Her dog Annie and cats, Tipsy, Katie, and Bonnie also survive her.

The family profusely thanks the Surgical Intensive Care Team at Parkridge Medical Center for the compassionate and professional attention they provided to Susan.  As was her wish, Susan donated all useful organs.  Memorial contributions may be made to the William M & Alice D Shoemaker Scholarship in Biology, P.O. Box 249, University, MS, 38677.

Susan had a big heart, a joyful outlook, and strove to make the world a happier place for those she loved.  She will be greatly missed and will always be in our memories.

Arrangements are by Advantage Funeral of Chattanooga, Tenn.
