Services for Elizabeth McGilvray “Betty” Williams will be held today, Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Gilbert officiating.
Mrs. Williams, 92, of Meridian, died Saturday Jan. 4, 2014, at Anderson Regional Medical Center in Meridian. She was born in Baker Hill, Ala., on Oct. 28, 1921, and graduated Baker Hill High School in 1939 as Valedictorian of her class. She and her mother then moved to Montgomery, Ala. where she attended Draughons Business College and found employment with Noland Company as their branch credit manager.
While living in Montgomery in 1944 she met a young soldier named Tom Williams stationed at Maxwell Field. Their romance persevered through his around-the-world service in the Army and they married in Montgomery on December 7, 1945. They moved to Meridian in 1946 and enjoyed over 60 years together.
Betty was an active member of Central United Methodist Church, the Williams Sunday School Class and the Pierian Literary Club.
Survivors include her daughter, Betty Ann Williams and her husband, Larry, of Brookhaven; a son, Thomas Marvin Williams III and his wife Teresa Thornhill, of Meridian; grandchildren, Robert Stephen Williams and his wife Elizabeth of Starkville, Thomas Neil Williams and his wife, Leigh, of Vicksburg, Thomas Marvin Williams IV, of Meridian; a step-grandson, Brent Little and his wife Jayme and son Liam of Conway, Ark.; step-grandchildren, Lauren Scheel, Lawrence Scheel and Landon Scheel of Meridian and great-grand children, Mallory Ann Williams and Eloise Davis Williams.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Marvin Williams Jr.; her mother Alvenia West McGilvray Jackson and father, Alto Ward McGilvray.
Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church.
Visitation will begin prior to the service at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
