Mattie King Austin



WINONA — Services for Mattie King Austin will be held today at 10 a.m. at Oliver Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Joe Pate officiating. Burial will be in Pine Bluff Cemetery.

Mrs. Austin, 97, died on Aug. 26, 2007, at Heartfelt Hospice in Meridian. She was born on June 24, 1910, in Hamburg, Ark. She moved with her family to Poplar Creek, Miss., when she was about two years old. She graduated from Montgomery County Agricultural High School in Kilmichael in 1929, and returned the following year for a business course. She attended Blue Mountain College to become a certified teacher in the Montgomery County School System. She taught in the Nations School for five years.

She was married to Thomas Sedell Austin on Aug. 11, 1935. They moved to Greenwood in 1938, where she lived most of her adult life.

Mrs. Austin was a precinct manager for the city, county and state elections in Greenwood for more than 30 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Greenwood for more than 50 years, where she taught Sunday School for many years and was an active member of the WMU. Her favorite church activity, with which she always helped, was Vacation Bible School.

She operated her monogramming business in her home in Greenwood for more than 29 years, and continued to operate it in her home in Meridian for more than 10 years, until 2006, when she moved to Aldersgate, a retirement home in Meridian.

She was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church in Meridian.

Survivors include her son, Thomas Sedell Austin Jr., of The Woodlands, Texas; a daughter, Jackie Austin Holmes and her husband, Dr. Edward H. Holmes, of Meridian; grandchildren, Hope Holmes Mikel, of Tampa, Olivia Holmes Maley and her husband, Brad, of Madison, and Austin Wilburn Holmes of Meridian and great-grandchildren, Tyler Mikel and Mattie Mikel, of Tampa, Holmes Maley and Hart Maley, of Madison; sisters, Viola King Jones of Greenwood and Helen King McKinney, of Knoxville, Tenn. and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 57 years, Thomas Sedell Austin; her parents, W.E. King and Susan Ware King; brothers, Guy King, Drew King, Walter King and Lawrence King and a sister, Minnie King Black.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 500 West Washington Street, Greenwood, MS 38930, or Pine Bluff Church Cemetery Fund, C/O Peggy Donahoo, 429 Vaiden-Kilmichael Road, Kilmichael, MS 39747.

Visitation will be today one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.



Hazel McFadden Phillips



GILBERTOWN, Ala. — Services for Hazel McFadden Phillips will be held today at 11 a.m. at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Gilbertown Cemetery.

Ms. Phillips, 89, of Gilbertown, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2007, at Washington County Nursing Home.

Survivors include her son, John M. “Boots” Phillips of Gilbertown; four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney Phillips and a son, Thomas Phillips.

Visitation will be today from 9 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.



Thomas Hastings Greer, Sr.

Retired



PENSACOLA, Fla. — Graveside service for Thomas Hastings Greer, Sr. will be held today at 1:30 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Grenada, Miss. with the Rev. Lynn Barker of All Saints Episcopal Church officiating. Waters and Hibbert Funeral Home of Pensacola and Garner Harper Funeral Home of Grenada are in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Greer, 94, of Pensacola, died Saturday, August 25, 2007. Mr. Greer was born in Paris, Tenn., to Stanley Thomas and Anna Hastings Greer on July 27, 1913. He graduated from Bowling Green Business School and the Memphis School Of Law. He worked with The William A. Webster Pharmaceutical Co. of Memphis and was a partner in Southland Motor Co. of Macon, Miss. He was owner of the B. F. Goodrich Auto Store of Starkville, Miss.

He retired as an auditor from the Mississippi State Tax Commission. Tommy and Dot moved to Pensacola, Fla. in 1995.

Mr. Greer was active in The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection in Starkville and served as Senior Warden, Junior Warden and Treasurer.

Survivors include a son, Thomas H. Greer, Jr. and his wife, Joy, of Meridian,

Miss., daughters, Laura Bess Greer Clapp and her husband, Roger, of Florence, Miss. and Dorothy Greer Tampary and her husband Anthony “Bubba” of Pensacola; grandchildren Thomas H. Greer III, Laura Greer Holladay, Debbie Greer Tucker, Roger Clapp, Jr., Todd Clapp, Andrew Clapp, Benjamin Clapp, Anthony Tampary, Jr., and Mary Alex Tampary Dill and seventeen great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy West Ellison Greer and his parents.

Memorials may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection in Starkville or to a charity of choice.

His grandchildren will serve as Pallbearers, Thomas H. Greer III,

Laura Greer Holladay, Debbie Greer Tucker, Roger Clapp, Jr., Todd Clapp,

Andrew Clapp, Benjamin Clapp, Anthony Tampary, Jr., and Mary Alex Tampary

Dill.



Rev. James E. Withers



PHILADELPHIA — Services for the Rev. James E. Withers will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at McClain-Hays Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Lakewood Memorial Cemetery in Jackson at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Rev. Withers died Monday, August 27, near Terry.

Visitation will be held at today from 5 p.m.- 8 p.m. at the funeral home.



Lucy Perry Hoke



GILBERTOWN, Ala. — Services for Lucy Perry Hoke will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clovis Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Morgan Chapel Cemetery.

Ms. Hoke, 83, of Butler, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2007, at Willow Trace Nursing Center in Butler.

Survivors include her sons, Paul Hanser and Larry Perry; a daughter, Eldora Gibson; one sister; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.



Mable Louise Irby

Retired



Graveside services for Mable Louise Irby will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery with the Revs. Roger Ivy and Bob Followell officiating. James F. Webb Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Irby, 82, of the Basic City Community, died Monday, Aug. 27, 2007, in her home. She was a retired nurse at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include her husband, William C. Irby of Basic City; a daughter, Patsy Swanner and her husband, Charles, of Meehan; sons, Ray Long and his wife, Corless of Chunky and Ronnie Long and his wife, Lib, of Meridian; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Maudie and Wesley Shelton; brothers, Willie Heinz and Arthur Shelton; and the father of her children, Lawson Long.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 9:30 a.m.- 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.



Rev. William C. Nickey



PHILADELPHIA — Services for the Rev. William C. Nickey will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Bogue Homa Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. John E. Stephens Chapel Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.

Rev. Nickey, 88, of Heidelberg, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2007, at Laurelwood Care Center in Laurel.

Survivors include his wife, Josephine Nickey; daughters, Vada Nickey, Kathleen Isaac, Ruby Thompson, May McGelsey, Emaline Lewis and Rosie Joe; sons, Nathaniel Nickey, Lydell Nickey, Lyndell Nickey and Lyndon Nickey; 32 grandchildren; 72 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.



Sarah Patricia Gough McNabb



PORT RICHEY, Fla. — Graveside services for Sarah Patricia Gough McNabb will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. at Magnolia Cemetery in Meridian, Miss. Faupel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. McNabb, 70, of Port Richey, formerly of Meridian, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2007, in her home. She was born on Feb. 7, 1937, in Meridian. She was a Christian and lived life to the fullest. She will be remembered as one who had a big heart.

Survivors include her children, Patricia Turnage of Oklahoma City, Okla., Richard Wells of Hattiesburg, Charles McNabb Jr., of Tampa and Troy McNabb of New Port Richey; sisters, Peggy Curtis and Elizabeth Crawford; brothers, Ransom Gough, Ronald Gough, and Richard Gough; grandchildren, Lindsey McNabb, Phillip Charles McNabb, Sallie Marie Black and Richard Wells Jr. and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles S. McNabb and her parents, Ronald C. and Odie Zelle Gough.
