Man sentenced for killing girlfriend's daughter

TYLERTOWN, Miss. — A 28-year-old Tylertown man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for killing his girlfriend's 16-month-old daughter.

The state attorney general's office said in a news release that James Dustin Lowery pleaded guilty to felony child abuse and manslaughter in Walthall County Circuit Court on Monday.

Prosecutors say Lowery was taking care of his girlfriend's daughter when she became unresponsive and was taken to the emergency room. The child's cause of death was listed as blunt force trauma to the head.

Attorney General Jim Hood says in the release that Lowery gave conflicting reports as to how the child was injured.

Lowery was sentenced to 40 years for felony child abuse and 20 years suspended for manslaughter. He also is to serve five years' post release supervision.
