Horn Lake toughens curfew for minors

HORN LAKE, Miss. — Horn Lake officials say they hope to prevent gang activity with a newly toughened curfew law for minors.

Horn Lake Aldermen Tuesday night unanimously approved moving the time at which curfew begins for anyone under 18 from the current 11 p.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. The Commercial Appeal reports ( ) that the change will take effect in 30 days.

"They don't need to be out there at 10:30, 11 o'clock at night, just running the streets and raising Cain," Alderman Tim Smith said in introducing the ordinance change.

The curfew will continue to end at 6 a.m. and existing exemptions will remain in place.

"I don't think there's any reason to be out after 11," Police Chief Darryl Whaley said. "We have exceptions that would cover any legitimate reason."

Exceptions are made for youths accompanied by a parent, or those heading to or returning from work, school or church activities.
