Embattled sheriff replaced for Christmas parade

HURLEY, Miss. — Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd has been replaced as grand marshal in the annual Christmas parade in Hurley.

Jeremy Snelgrove, volunteer firefighter and parade organizer, tells The Mississippi Press ( ) that Saturday's parade leader will be Lt. Matt Butler, the Northeast Fire Department's firefighter of the year in 2012.

Snelgrove says Byrd has traditionally been the grand marshal annually for the parade. He says organizers and Fire Chief Kaleb Kirkwood made the decision to replace Byrd this week.

Byrd is facing multiple charges — one federal charge in Alabama and 31 state charges in Mississippi.

As part of a plea agreement, Byrd is expected to plead guilty on Dec. 10 in federal court in Mobile to one felony count.

In Mississippi, Byrd faces 29 felonies and two misdemeanors.
