Feds asked to observe Hattiesburg mayoral election

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — The Mississippi Democratic Party and the Hattiesburg City Council have asked the Justice Department to send observers to the city for the Sept. 24 mayoral election.

The Democratic Party sent a request to the Justice Department last month. The Hattiesburg City Council last month adopted a resolution also asking for poll watchers.

Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree's 37-vote victory in June over former City Councilman Dave Ware was challenged in court and eventually led to the second election. DuPree tells the Hattiesburg American (http://hatne.ws/19lHJAH ) also asked observers be present.

Polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.

The new election was called by Judge William Coleman after a mistrial was declared in a suit brought by Ware, challenging the outcome.
