GULFPORT, Miss. —
Anthony Williams pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter and one count of aggravated assault during his murder trial.
The state had not yet rested its case Thursday when defense attorney Michael Crosby asked Judge Lisa Dodson, outside the jury's presence, to dismiss the murder charge and one of two assault charges.
The Sun Herald reports the 27-year-old Williams was on trial for a June 3, 2011 shooting in Gulfport that killed Melvin Presley and wounded Jason Floyd and Herbert Evans.
The judge sentenced Williams to 20 years for Presley's slaying and 20 years for shooting Floyd. She ordered the terms served consecutively for a total of 40 years.
