Ex-Sen. Trent Lott hospitalized in Jackson, Miss.

JACKSON — Former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott is hospitalized in Jackson, Miss.

Baptist Medical Center spokesman Robby Channell says the 71-year-old Republican was listed in fair condition Thursday afternoon. He said he couldn't state the cause of Lott's hospitalization.

The lawyer and lobbyist has a home and office in the Jackson area.

He lobbies for the Washington-based firm of Patton Boggs LLP and the Ridgeland, Miss., law firm of Butler, Snow, O'Mara, Stevens & Cannada PLLC.

Lott was elected to the U.S. House in 1972 and U.S. Senate in 1988.

He stepped down as Senate majority leader in 2002 after he made remarks at a birthday party for then-Sen. Strom Thurmond that seemed to support segregation. Lott returned to the Senate leadership as minority whip before retiring in 2007.
