State record watermelon from Water Valley

WATER VALLEY —

WATER VALLEY, Miss. (AP) — A Water Valley watermelon holds the new state record for largest watermelon.

WCBI TV reports (http://bit.ly/1cxNAHE ) melon grower, Jerry Vaughn, weighed his melon in at a record 239. 5 pounds, and its 38 inches long with a girth of 5 feet, 3 inches.

Vaughn officially weighed the melon in last Friday on state certified scales.

On Saturday, Vaughn and his family headed to Missouri to enter the melon in the Great Pumpkin Common-Wealth.

He won top prize in the watermelon category and $600.

He credits the unusual summer weather, hot September days, and the seed-line for the weight of the melon.
