3 sentenced in Miss. for poaching turkeys

WATER VALLEY, Miss. —

Three Yalobusha County men have pleaded guilty to poaching wild turkeys.

Mississippi wildlife officials say in a news release that Jeffery C. Reeves, Randall A. Byford and Anthony C. Davis, will each serve 10 days in the county jail for killing too many turkeys, killing hens, killing them out of season and on someone else's land.

"For taking these birds out of season and shooting these hens, these men got the appropriate punishment, and if they do it again the punishment will be worse next time," said Jim Walker, spokesman for the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.

Walker says the men were arrested recently after wildlife officials received a tip. They entered the pleas in justice court.

The three also must pay fines ranging from $500 to $2,000.

"Seasons and bag limits are put into place on the resource, when people act outside of those there could be a negative threat on the resource," said Mark Beason with the MDWFP.

Reeves pleaded guilty to hunting wild turkeys during the closed season, hunting from a public road, and killing 10 wild turkey hens. Total fines and assessments were $2,028. Reeves was sentenced to 60 days in jail with 50 days suspended. Reeves will serve 10 days in county jail.

Byford pleaded guilty to hunting wild turkeys during the closed season and possession of wild turkeys taken unlawfully. Total fines and assessments were $1,027. In addition, Byford was sentenced to 60 days in the county jail with 50 days suspended.

Davis pleaded guilty to hunting wild turkeys during the closed season. Total fines and assessments were $676. Davis was sentenced to 60 days in the county jail with 50 days suspended.

MDWFP investigators said the three had worked together to poach turkeys for the last eight years.
