JACKSON, Miss. — The Mississippi Supreme Court has upheld the conviction of a Jackson man sentenced to life in prison without parole for a machete attack on the mother of his young daughter.

Jermaine Reed was convicted in Hinds County in 2011 of aggravated assault in the attack on his ex-girlfriend Andrea Taylor. The incident occurred in 2008.

Reed was certified as a habitual offender based on two previous convictions, including one for bank robbery in federal court.

In his appeal, Reed argued a Hinds County judge erred in not ordering a mental examination.

The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that nothing in the court record supported an order for a mental exam.
