Man arrested in Ripley shooting death

RIPLEY, Miss. — RIPLEY, Miss. (AP) — A shooting in Ripley left one man dead and another injured.

Police say 26-year-old Isidro Mercado has been arrested and is expected to be charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder.

Ripley police tell the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal ( ) they received a 911 call of shots fired around 6 a.m. Wednesday. When officers arrived, they found 35-year-old Ernesto Chaires dead at the scene.

Police say 34-year-old Joe Morales was found across the street with a gunshot wound and apparent trauma to the head. Morales was airlifted to a Memphis hospital in critical condition.

No bond has been set for Mercado, who is scheduled for arraignment Thursday. He is being held in the Tippah County Jail.

It was unclear whether he has an attorney.
