Some inmates, 1 guard injured in prison fight

WALNUT GROVE, Miss. — Officials with a prison management company and the Mississippi Department of Corrections are investigating a disturbance at a facility in Walnut Grove in Leake County.

Issa Arnita, corporate communications director for Management and Training Corporation, says a fight broke out about 7 p.m. Tuesday in one of the housing units.

Arnita says one correctional officer suffered minor injuries as did several inmates.

University of Mississippi Medical Center spokesman Jack Mazurak says eight patients came in to the hospital from Walnut Grove. He says four were treated and released, four were admitted.

No other details were released. Arnita says the prison is on lockdown.

Arnita says the incident may be gang-related.

Investigators will review video footage of the incident.

Walnut Grove opened in 2001 and can house 1,461 inmates.
