HATTIESBURG, Miss. — The Mississippi Department of Employment Security will help 300 Guam National Guardsmen with their unemployment claims.

MDES officials say in a news release that the soldiers are returning from Afghanistan and will cycle out of the service through Camp Shelby.

MDES officials say the soldiers are eligible for the Unemployment Compensation for Ex-Military, or UCX. However, Guam is not set up to pay unemployment benefits.

MDES staff will take the UCX claims at Camp Shelby and process and pay them through the agency's online services. The Guam Department of Labor will certify that the guardsmen are registered with Guam's Employment Services program and monitor their work search efforts.

The agreement was arranged between the U.S. Department of Labor and the National Association of State Workforce Agencies.
