Former DeSoto Co. school labeled a Miss. Landmark

JACKSON — JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — An old one-room schoolhouse in DeSoto County has been designated a Mississippi Landmark.

Cockrum School received the designation Friday from the Board of Trustees of the Department of Archives and History.

The label is designed to protect the building from any changes that might alter its historic character. The school in the Cockrum community was built before DeSoto County consolidated into a single school district in 1927. The school served grades 1-8, remaining open until 1959. It has been used as a community center.

The Archives and History board also approved historical markers for three sites: Beulah Cemetery in Warren County; Randolph School in Pontotoc County and Winkler's Bluff in Claiborne County.

Historical markers recognize significant people, events and movements in Mississippi.
