MERIDIAN —     The U.S. Postal Service has announced extended office hours for 62 Post Offices in Mississippi on Saturday, Dec. 22, the last day to mail items for delivery by Express Mail.

The main U.S. Post Office in Meridian at 2100 9th St., will remain open until 2 p.m. Dec. 22. The Philadelphia Post Office will also stay open until 2 p.m. on that day.

First Class Mail will need to be mailed by Dec. 20 and Priority Mail by Dec. 21 to arrive by Christmas Day, according to a U.S. Postal Service press release.

Monday, Dec. 17 is expected to be the busiest day of the holiday season for the U.S. Postal Service and traffic in most Post Office lobbies will likely be heavy, postal officials warn.

The U.S. Post Office is encouraging residents to purchase stamps and mail packages at other locations during the holiday season.

"For those who would like to conduct postal business while running other errands, most locations of CVS Pharmacy, Walgreens, Kroger, Wal-Mart Supercenter, and many other local merchants offer postage stamps for sale," according to the press release. "Contract Postal Units and most locations of Office Depot offer both postage sales and package shipping."

Transactions can also be done online through www.usps.com, and free Carrier Pickup is provided for packages shipped through Click ‘N’ Ship on the USPS website, postal officials said.

Nationally, the U.S. Postal Service expects to deliver 365 million packages this holiday season — a 20 percent increase over 2011, according to the press release. In total, nearly 18 billion cards, letters and packages will be delivered between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve.
