MPD detectives investigate robbery attempts

MERIDIAN —     Detectives with the Meridian Police Department are investigating two attempted armed robbery incidents that occurred early Monday morning believing the incidents may be connected.

Capt. James Sharpe, assistant chief of the MPD, said in a press release Monday afternoon that a lone black man unsuccessfully attempted to rob two Cefco convenience store locations. The first attempt occurred at 3:12 a.m. at the Cefco #503 located at 4413 35th Ave. The second occurred a short time later, at 3:35 a.m., at Cefco #18 located at 144 North Hills Street.

In the first case, Sharpe said a lone black man wearing a black hoodie and black carpenter pants attempted to enter the business on 35th Avenue via a locked door while displaying a handgun. When entry could not be gained the suspect left on foot.

In the second incident, a lone black man dressed in a black hoodie wearing a blue cloth over his face did enter the North Hills Street store brandishing a handgun. Sharpe said the clerk fled the counter area into another part of the building to get away. Sharpe said the suspect fired one shot and then left the store. The clerk was unhurt, Sharpe said.

"There were no injuries and no property was taken," said Sharpe. "Detectives are not ruling out the possibility these incidents are related. The suspect descriptions and his actions are similar."

The Meridian Police Department asks anyone with information on these incidents to contact the Meridian Police Department Criminal Investigation Division at (601) 485-1859 or Crime Stoppers at (601) 485-1860.
