MERIDIAN —     The Meridian-Lauderdale County Public Library has implemented its Food for Fines program to help families during the holiday season.

Steve McCartney, director of the library, said Wednesday that each canned good or non-perishable item such as rice or pasta, that is given to the library through the program, will count as one dollar off a library fine the participant may have.

The Food for Fines program will continue through Dec. 21.

"Everything we collect in food will be donated to South Harbor Shelter," McCartney said.

South Harbor Shelter is a shelter for the homeless, including families. It is a component of the Multi-County Community Service Agency, and is an agency of United Way of East Mississippi.
