Troopers will be out in force for Fourth

MERIDIAN —     The Fourth of July holiday period will mean more people on the highways of Mississippi and with it the potential for traffic accidents and impaired drivers.

Troopers across the state will also be out in force to try and curtail as many accidents and drunk drivers as possible, said Mississippi Highway Patrol Cpl. Andy West, public relations officer for Troop H headquartered in Meridian.

"We will have extra troopers on the highways who will be working overtime to keep the roadways safe for motorists," West said. "We want everyone to have a memorable holiday period, good memories, not bad ones that are associated with wrecks and traffic fatalities."

West said troopers who normally would be off will be working overtime to ensure safety. West said troopers will be looking for impaired drivers, seat belt violations and those who are speeding.

West said the holiday safety period will begin today at 6 p.m. and run through Sunday until midnight. He urges everyone to drive safely and responsibly.

"Our goal is to always have zero fatalities," West says. "If we can do that, achieve that goal, then we will be able to consider this period a success."
