MCC honors Veterans

Veterans recognize MCC

MERIDIAN —     On the day after Veterans Day, Meridian Community College saluted veterans both on campus and in the community with a program held in the MCC's Graham Gymnasium.

In addition to recognizing veterans, Meridian Community College was honored as being named to the Military Friendly Schools list for 2013 by "G.I. Jobs," a publication of Victory Media, a veteran-owned business that also publishes the magazines "Military Spouse," and "Vetrepreneur."

The list acknowledges the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members, veterans, and spouses as students, and ensure their success on campus.

"I'm very proud of this award," said MCC President Dr. Scott Elliott. "We're one of four community colleges in Mississippi to receive this award," he said, adding that the College has received the military recognition for four consecutive years.

This year's theme for MCC's Veterans Day recognition was "A History of Service."

Master Sgt. Terry Jones of the Mississippi Air National Guard told the audience: "Let us never forget the reason of why we are here at this time," adding, "veterans, thank you for standing up for something greater than yourself."

Capt. Charles C. Moore II, commanding officer of Naval Air Station Meridian, said there has been an "exceptional relationship" with NAS Meridian and MCC. The partnership has allowed U.S. Navy personnel to continue or begin their education.
