Car thief being sought

MERIDIAN —     A BOLO in law enforcement terms means for officers to "be on the lookout" for something or someone.

Friday afternoon that is exactly what a Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department deputy was doing when he came across a vehicle reportedly stolen from Petal in the parking lot of Lowe's in the Bonita Lakes area.

The car, a gray Dodge Magnum, was allegedly bought several days ago by an individual in Meridian using counterfeit money. Petal police put the car's description and that of the suspect on the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) network. Local law enforcement agencies were advised recently the car may be in the Meridian area prompting the BOLO. The deputy discovered the vehicle around 1:45 p.m. and called Central Dispatch to confirm it was indeed the correct vehicle.

The suspect is described as a black male, 5 feet 9 inches to 6 feet tall with medium complexion, a shaved head, broad shoulders, and sporting a goatee. He is said to have been wearing a white T-shirt and dark jeans at the time of the car's discovery.

At one point the suspect was inside Lowe's but by the time the deputy was joined by officers and detectives with the MPD to try and locate the suspect in the store, the suspect had apparently seen the officers arriving and slipped away.

The car was impounded by authorities and a search for the suspect continues.

If anyone has information pertaining to this incident they are urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 601-485-1860.
