A long awaited paving project on a county road is closer to completion.
Some 15 families live on Raymond Cobb Road, which has been a gravel road. One half of the five mile road was paved two years ago, but now the rest of the road, on the north side, is being paved, much to the relief of District Two Supervisor Wayman Newell.
"Let me say the people there are delighted," Newell said at a recent board meeting. "I rode up there yesterday and I had three people to flag me down and tell me how much they appreciated us getting on it before the winter set in."
Newell cautioned drivers along Raymond Cobb Road to be careful because there is a significant amount of dust on one side of the road, which can impair visibility.
"If you meet oncoming traffic, slow down, because it''s dangerous right now," Newell said.
Work began last week to pave the second part of the road, which was expected to cost about $300,000.
Other roads throughout the county are having work done as well, according to Harris Wilder, road manager.
"We have the roads ready. We have a contractor coming in here. We'll start with Rob Sims Road," Wilder said.
The contractor is expected to begin projects on Monday, WIlder said. The county has already prepared roads through repairing and leveling the base of roads.
Striping will also get under way for some roads. Others will also get raised reflective markers.
A list of striping projects from the county names those roads to be striped as:
A.C. Brown Road, Pine Springs Road from A.C. Brown to State Boulevard Extension; King Road from city limits to Windsor Road; Cook Road from Poplar Springs Drive to Dogwood Lake Road; Timber Lake Road; Ponta Hills Road, Chapel Road, Cotton Gin Road from Lizelia Road to Highway 45; Frederickson Drive, Campground Road from Chip Pickering Road to Russell-Topton Road; Jeff Davis School Road, Causeyville Road from Center Grove Road to Highway 45 Bypass; Valley Road, Collinsville-Martin Road (raised reflective markers only) Center Hill Road (center line stripe on part being overlaid and markers on all) Centerhill-Martin Road; Charlie Dunn Road, and James Stoddard Road.
Except where otherwise noted, all roads will receive center line striping, stop bars and other detail striping will be provided where appropriate, and white edge striping will be provided on Pine Springs and Marion-Russell Roads.
In addition, raised reflective markers will be placed in the center of the following roads: Pine Springs Road, King Road, Cook Road, Ponta Hills Road, Cotton Gin Road, Marion-Russell Road where there will be additional markers on edges at steep curves; Causeyville Road, Valley Road, and Chapel Road.
