Sen. Burton appointed to education board

MERIDIAN —     Sen. Terry C. Burton, a member of the Southern Regional Education Board, has been appointed to its Commission on Career and Technical Education.

The Commission on Career and Technical Education wants to increase the number of students who graduate high school and create greater opportunities for them to obtain technical training that culminates in a certificate of further learning or an associate degree or higher.

Also high among the commission’s goals is finding ways to help students with low academic achievement to increase classroom performance while they receive career and vocational training that makes them more employable.

“With the legislative and executive branch focus squarely on Mississippi’s economic development in the areas of education, healthcare and energy related fields this appointment by SREB Chairman Governor Steve Beshear of Kentucky, gives me a unique opportunity to improve the career and technical applications of our community and junior colleges,” Burton said. “These institutions play a most vital role in workforce development and I welcome the opportunity to assist in those efforts from a policy making stand point. I look forward to bringing the results of the commission’s efforts to the governor and lieutenant governor and for consideration."

Burton’s membership and involvement with the State Workforce Investment Board and Medical Care Advisory Committee give him a unique insight into the demands of today’s jobs market and its future trends, according to a press release.

Findings and recommendations will be shared with fellow lawmakers. Burton serves as Chairman of the Energy Committee and Vice Chairman of the Appropriations Committee and University and Colleges Committee among others.
