Firefighters from Naval Air Station Meridian and from the Lauderdale County Fire Service fought an intense blaze that broke out late Tuesday morning at an abandoned building on John C. Stennis Drive.
Andrew Clayton, the chief of NAS Meridian Fire Department, said when fire units arrived on the scene at about 11:30 a.m. the building was fully engulfed in flames and thick, black smoke.
The building that was a pizza restaurant, has been empty for years. Clayton said he was unsure what caused the fire.
No one was hurt during the incident.
It took two hours for the firefighters, including personnel from Northeast Lauderdale, Sam Dale, Toomsuba, and Lauderdale volunteer fire departments, to contain the fire and then to inspect the remains.
NAS Meridian has a mutual aid agreement with Lauderdale County to assist when needed.
"We are always willing to help in times of need. We have an outstanding working relationship with the fire, police and sheriff's department in Lauderdale and Kemper counties," Clayton said.
The building was a total loss and an investigation into the cause of the blaze is under way.
